                                          Who we are:

Science Olympiad is a nationally organized competition in biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering.  There are competitions at national, state and regional levels. To learn more about the National Science Olympiad program, visit: soinc.org.

The MMS Science Olympiad Club is a volunteer-led, Foundation-supported, school club, that prepares students to participate in Division B events at the San Diego County regional competition. Science Olympiad gives our students an opportunity to study, in-depth and hands-on, STEM-based subjects and real world problems, that they would not be exposed to inside a standard middle school curriculum. Science Olympiad challenges our students to think above and beyond "the box", enhances their education, and builds a stronger scientific community within our cluster, connecting students, parents, and teachers with area scientists who are experts in their fields.

The SO Regional Competition will be on February 8, 2020 at San Diego Miramar College OR March 21, 2020 at The University of San Diego. Participating schools will be randomly assigned to compete on one of these days.  Last year, over 100 teams from all over San Diego County participated and Muirlands fielded 5 teams with more than 70 students participating. We placed 11th overall out of 30 schools. What a proud accomplishment by our team!

This year's regional competition consists of 23 events, ranging from 'building events' that test engineering skills to experimental labs and written tests -- there's something for everyone! Participants can enter one or more events, keeping in mind that preparing for each event may require a significant time commitment.

FAQs

What is the cost?: As a MMS Club, we can not charge a fee for participation. However there are real costs to be covered, including registration fees, reseach materials and building supplies, so we request and gratefully accept donations. The suggested donation is $60. Any amount you are able to donate helps.

What is the time commitment? This depends on the number and type of events your child chooses to enter, but in general, he or she can expect to meet about once per week, per event, for 14 weeks (from mid-Oct. until the competition). So if your child signs up to participate in two events, that's a twice-weekly commitment.

When and where do we meet? Practices start the second week of October and run for approximately 15 weeks. Times and locations of practices will be determined by your child's event coach. Some coaches will meet on campus after school, others will meet in the evenings after work. We will attempt to accommodate a variety of schedules, including students who ride the bus.

How can I help? We need coaches, mentors, reference materials, lab and building materials, and financial donations. If you are able to help with any of these, please contact us (muirlandsso@gmail.com).
